Texas to Bataan (1942)

n the 17th of the 24 films in Monogram’s “Range Buster” series, Texas ranch owner Conroy (Steve Clark) returns from Washington with an order for horses to be shipped to the Philippines. The Range Busters, Dusty (John King), Davy (David Sharpe) and Alibi (Max Terhune), are selected to take the horses there but, before leaving, they capture three spies who are trying to steal the horses and also learn that the ranch cook, Cookie (Escolastico Baucin), is a Japanese spy, but he manages to escape. In the Philippines, they go to a cafe for dinner and see Cookie and Miller, a German spy. Eavesdropping, they learn that Ken Richards (Frank Ellis), a neighboring Texas rancher, is the Axis contact back in the states. They capture Cookie and break up the spy ring in the Phillipines, and then return to Texas intent on settling matters with Richards. They do so and are honored by the U.S. Government just as the radio blares forth the December 7, 1941 announcement of the Pearl Harbor bombing. They head for the nearest enlistment station.

Phantom of the Range (1936)

Jerry Lane (Tom Tyler), a young rancher, happens in on an auction sale of the ranch of the late Hiram Moor, a noted miser. His curiousity is aroused by the unwarranted high bidding for a certain picture and he buys it and the ranch, and then goes for explanations to Jeanne Moore (Beth Marion. ) She explains that there is a rumor that her grandfather had a large amount of money hidden somewhere on the ranch and that the chart showing the location of his treasure is, in all probability, hidden in the picture. Jerry hires Jeanne as his secretary, and Perdita (Soledad Jiminez), a combination chaperone and cook. He also hires Eddie Parsons (Sammy Cohen), a cockney kleptomanic, to serve as his general handy man. Brandon (Forrest Taylor), a neighboring rancher, was one of those who bid high on the picture. He, intent on obtaining the chart, makes an agreement with several of his associates and hires Mark Braden (Charles King), an ex-prizefighter, to assault Jerry on the town street. This doesn’t work, so with the assistance of Perdita, steals the picture. But Eddie has found and removed the chart and, not before some soul-searching, gives it to Jerry. Mark, who has been playing the part of a Phantom Rider, who scares people away from the ranch, rebels at the way he is being treated by Brandon. The latter has him killed and fixes the blame on Jerry. Producer Sam Katzman made this one again in 1939 as “Straight Shooter” with Tim McCoy. Katzman was never one to buy new scripts when he old ones gathering dust in his office.
